Settle in for an overnight journey via NH-75 through Hassan, Belur, and Mudigere into the Western Ghats.
05:30 AM – 06:30 AM: Arrive at the scenic coffee-plantation hamlet of Balagal/Kalasa. Check into your traditional Malnad wooden homestay. Freshen up with hot water.
06:30 AM – 07:15 AM: Savor a hot Malnad breakfast (Neer Dosa or Akki Rotti with coconut chutney and fresh filter coffee). Pack your dry daypack with rain covers, energy bars, and a packed lunch.
07:15 AM – 08:00 AM: Board rugged open-top 4x4 local jeeps at Balagal for an off-road ascent (6 km) through deep slush and boulders to reach the Forest Department Office at Mullodi village (3,100 ft).
08:00 AM – 10:30 AM (The Trail Begins): Clear forest entry checks and biometric permit logging. Cross two gushing streams over stepping stones. Enter the dense, dark Shola forest canopy, trekking on spongy leaf litter alongside moss-covered roots. Emerge onto the open, undulating grasslands leading to the solitary ruined shelter known as Ontimane (Single House).
10:30 AM – 01:00 PM (The Ridge Ascent): Ascend the steep, wind-swept ridges across Lobo’s House ruins and the iconic Zig-Zag point, where constant monsoon mist sweeps across the slopes. Tackle the final grassy spur to reach Kudremukh Peak (6,214 ft). Take in the 360-degree panoramic views of floating cloud blankets cascading over endless green valleys.
01:00 PM – 02:00 PM: Eat your packed lunch at the designated shelter point while soaking in the cool mountain breeze.
02:00 PM – 05:30 PM (Descent): Begin the descent down the ridge. Forest guidelines mandate that all trekkers pass Ontimane before 3:30 PM. Complete the forest exit logging at Mullodi.
05:30 PM – 07:00 PM: Hop into the 4x4 jeeps for the off-road ride back to the base homestay. Change into dry clothes and enjoy hot tea with crispy onion pakodas.
08:30 PM: Gather for an indoor/covered bonfire (weather permitting) and a buffet dinner featuring authentic Malnad specialties (vegetarian and traditional chicken curry). Overnight stay at the homestay.
07:30 AM – 08:30 AM: Wake up to birdsong and mountain views. Enjoy a traditional breakfast of hot idlis, sambar, and fresh plantation coffee.
08:30 AM – 10:30 AM: Take a short, refreshing walk through private plantations to the secluded Somavati Falls (or Elaneeru Falls) for a splash in natural rock pools. Visit a local coffee-curing estate to buy fresh single-origin Arabica/Robusta beans, local cardamom, and homemade spices.
11:00 AM: Check out from the homestay and board your vehicle for the return journey.
01:30 PM – 02:30 PM: En-route self-sponsored lunch stop at a traditional highway restaurant near Belur or Hassan.
09:30 PM – 10:30 PM: Arrive back in Bengaluru, dropping off at Goraguntepalya, Majestic, and Indiranagar, concluding the weekend trek.
